Understanding Venous Reflux Disease
Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when these valves become damaged or diseased. As
a result, vein valves do not close properly, leading to symptoms of:
  • Varicose Veins
  • Leg Heaviness
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen Limbs
  • Skin Changes and Ulcers
Predisposing factors include heredity, pregnancy, injury to vein, phlebitis, prolonged periods of standing, obesity, and sedentary life style. By age 50, almost 50% of the population will have varicose veins. Superficial venous reflux disease is progressive and symptoms will worsen over time if left untreated. A full venous examination including duplex ultrasound is needed to determine underlying problems and to direct therapy options.
